Name: Sperm Whale
Information: For Herman Melville, Moby Dick was the great white whale that haunted the man obsessed with killing him. Perhaps in its day, Moby Dick did a disservice for whales much the same way the film Jaws contributed to the great white shark's demise around the world. Both species are now protected and in some sectors rebounding. Unlike their baleen brethren, sperm whales have teeth. They are the largest of toothed whales noted for their enormous head which typically can be one third their length. Sperm whales are deep divers. Some have been known to dive down to 9,000 feet. Typically, the whale bottoms out at around 1,200 feet. Because of this ability to deep dive, they feed on a creature that is the stuff of legend — the giant squid. Almost all that is known about deep sea squid has been learned from specimens found in captured sperm whale stomachs. The giant squid are considered to be the sperm whale's prime diet, as large deep sea fish stocks are becoming depeleted by humans. They get their name from a liquidy, waxy substance found in their heads. The sperm whale is among the most cosmopolitan whales in the world, found in all oceans and in the Meditteranean Sea. The species is relatively abundant from Arctic waters to the equator. Wikipedia Kid's Planet
