Name: Grass Rockfish
Information: Most of the world's 102 rockfish species live in the north Pacific, although one species lives in the South Pacific/Atlantic and 4 species live in the north Atlantic. The coast off Southern California is the area of highest rockfish diversity with 56 species living there. Their range is impressive, from rocky intertidal zones, to almost 3000 meters deep, usually living on various substrates, often around rock outcrops. Some rockfish species are very long-lived, amongst the longest living fish on earth, with some from Alaska being over 200 years old. Rockfish are an important sport and commercial fish, and many species have been over fished, and seasons are tightly controlled in many areas. In California sanctuary waters their numbers range from stable to endangered, but some species of rockfish, like the ones on the Chesapeake Bay, are under attack from disease and over fishing.
